After his graduation from the Hampton Institute in 1916, Bertram Wilson joined the physics department of Goucher College. Other than a two-year absence to serve in the U.S. Army during WWI, he continued working at Goucher until 1970. As the department’s machinist he was responsible for building and maintaining equipment, often saving the college money through his skill and creativity.
On his fiftieth anniversary with the college, President Otto Kraushaar saluted him as a “trusted and respected friend to the staff of his department and to the countless students he has aided during his long association with the College.”
Mr. Wilson was a good cook whose specialty was potato rolls. He also played the piano and the organ at his church. But he never learned to drive, commuting to Goucher on the number 8 bus. He and his first wife, Carmen Pincham, had two children – Bertram Jr. and Doris.
