He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, and in March 1943, he was commissioned to the 2nd Lt. Corps of Engineers and was assigned to the 2nd Army Air Forces headquarters as an assistant staff engineer. He and his wife married on April 19, 1944.
From 1932 until 1942, he was manager of the heating equipment division at E.A. Wilson Co., He was also an industrial engineer in Lowell, from 1946 to 1956. In 1957, he purchased Hammar Hardware Co. and started Hammar Industrial Supply Company in Nashua. Following his retirement in 1972, he lived in Plantation, Florida, and moved back to Nashua in 1998.
He was an avid golfer, and was a past president of Vesper Country Club in Tyngsboro, and also had been director of the Nashua Country Club, Lago Mar Country Club in Florida, and Yorick Club in Lowell. He was also a former member of the Fort Lauderdale Yacht Club in Florida and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a bridge player, crossword puzzle fan and writer. He was a member of the Unitarian-Universalist Church in Nashua.
