Mrs. Yolanda R. (Lodie) Murphy, a resident of Stoneham and formerly longtime of Malden, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 14, 2010 at home with her loving family at her bedside. She was 94 years old.
A daughter of Italian immigrants, she was born on July 7, 1915 at the family home in Malden. She was one of four children of the late Benjamin Lodie and Theresa (Piotti) Lodie. Yolanda was raised in Malden and graduated from Notre Dame Academy in Tyngsboro. She matriculated to Emmanuel College where she received her degree in teaching. For 27 years, she taught English and French at Lincoln Jr. High School in Malden. A former longtime parishioner at St. Joseph’s Church in Malden, she was a daily communicant and Eucharistic minister for many years. She was a member of the Massachusetts Teacher’s Association and Catholic Daughters of America.
Mrs. Murphy loved sewing, knitting Irish sweaters for her family, reading, and crossword puzzles. She also loved gardening, often growing flowers and vegetables. Above all else, she enjoyed spending time with her family especially her dear grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Yolanda was the beloved wife of the late James A. Murphy Jr. with whom she shared 52 years of marriage. Devoted mother of Diane T. Weild and her late husband Bob Weild of Hudson, NH, Peg Drummey and her husband Larry of Stoneham, and James A. Murphy III of Malden. Dear sister of the late Lillian Viola, Charles Lodie, and Arnold Lodie. Mother in law of Linda A. Murphy of Saugus. Cherished grandmother of Carolyn R. Elsten of Hudson, NH, Cathleen M. Joyce of Carlisle, Diane E. Falzone of Nashua, NH, Laura J. Crowell of Hudson, NH, William D. MacKinnon III of Nashua, NH, Michael A. Drummey of Cameron, NC, Theresa M. Drummey of Stoneham, James A. Murphy IV of Saugus, Kristen A. Murphy of Melrose, and Brian F. Murphy of Melrose. Loving great-grandmother of Joshua, Halle, Bobby, Mary Kate, Lauren, Jessica, Rowan, Delaney, and Sean. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral from the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Thursday, March 18 at 8 AM followed by a Funeral Mass in honor and celebration of Yolanda’s life in St. Patrick Church, 71 Central St., Stoneham at 9 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours on Wednesday from 4-8 PM. Interment will be in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
