Lucille was born on February 21, 1918 to parents Wille and Millie Gross in Prince Georges County, Maryland. She was the fifth of seven children. Shortly after Lucille was born her family moved to Baltimore, Maryland. There she attended Baltimore City Public Schools until the sixth grade. Due to the death of both parents, Lucille was unable to finish school because she had to care for her younger siblings. During her teenage years Lucille met and married Roland White, and from this union they produced 10 children, 5 girls and 5 boys.
She was employed as a housekeeper at various doctors' offices and retired from Coppin State College as a custodian. Lucille and her family are longtime members of Saint Peter Claver Catholic Church, where she was baptized. She was a nurturing supportive loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend.
A few things Lucille enjoyed doing were - reading the newspaper in the morning with a cup of coffee and a pastry, listening to music, spending time at the famous Sphinx Club with her friends, bowling and cooking a good meal. Her door was always open for anyone looking for a meal. She even fed the birds, cats, dogs and squirrels. She also had many sayings like 'excuse me Mr. Pistol, I didn't know you were loaded', 'excuse the pig cause the hog is outside' and 'if it
was snake it would've bit you.'
A few of Lucille's favorite things were - spending time with family, steamed crabs, playing cards, watching the Baltimore Orioles, trips to the Casino, Utz potato chips, sitting on the porch, annual trips to Ocean City, double mint gum, and most of all receiving a good head scratch from anyone. She truly lived life to the fullest. Preceding Lucille in death was her husband, Roland White; her parents; her six siblings, Mary, Robert, Sadie, Aline, Edward and Johnny; and her sons, Ronald, Ellsworth and Steven. Mourning her loss are: her children, Leroy White, Shirley Johnson, Gwendolyn Harrison (Douglas), Larry White (devoted friend Carolyn McCoy), Sandra White, Darcel Cobb, Karen Shaw; a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
