He was also the first cousin once-removed to IndyCar driver Marco Andretti. His father Aldo Andretti, Mario's twin brother, retired from driving a race car after he nearly died in an accident. He competed in 393 races in the NASCAR Cup Series and compiled 2 wins. He also competed in Champ Car, getting 1 win, and the IndyCar Series, making 12 appearances in the Indianapolis 500.
