John Stewart, Esq., of Lough Veagh House, Churchill, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal, Ireland, was born 10 March 1795, eldest son of Alexander Stewart, Esq., of Gartnafuaran, Perthshire, Scotland, and Jean (or Jane) Buchanan, daughter of James Buchanan of Perthshire.
The age given on John's grave monument indicates he was born circa 1799, but his baptismal record in the Kilmadock Old Parish Register says he was born 10 March 1795 and baptised 3 April 1795, the son of Alexander Stewart and Jean Buchanan in Wester Torrie, near Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. John's baptism was witnessed by Daniel Ferguson and James Stewart, both in Wester Torrie.
John's father belonged to the Stewarts of Gartnafuaran, who were descended from Andrew Stewart, younger son of James Beg Stewart, 1st of Baldorran, grandson of Murdoch Stewart, 2nd Duke Albany, who was a grandson of Robert II, King of Scotland.
John Stewart, a magistrate in County Donegal and County Tipperary, purchased Lough Veagh House and its estate from Daniel and Elizabeth Chambers in 1845. By an unknown first wife, John had a son named Richard Stewart circa 1830. Richard became a medical doctor, but he predeceased his father in May 1856. John's second wife, whom he married 11 Dec. 1851 at Peter's Church in Dublin, was Bridget Hogan (c.1830-1886). John had no living children or grandchildren at the time of his death, so he bequeathed Lough Veagh House to his widow Bridget.
