James Thomas Fife was born on 16 October 1830 and baptized on 19 December 1830 at Old Church St Pancras, the son of James Fife and Mary Turner. He was an accountant. He married (1) Mary Ann Camp in 1853 by whom he had three children, She died in 1873. In 1875 he married Christiana Naomi Bouts by whom he had five children.
In 1881 he has living with him a daughter Janet aged 24 from his first marriage and an aunt Janet Fife aged 70 born Glasgow, a former Lady's Maid. In 1891 there is another daughter from an earlier marriage, Annie M, aged 32.
