Emily grew up in mainline Philadelphia. She was confirmed in the Episcopal Church and was a graduate of Upper Darby High School. She majored in economics at Sweet Briar College in Virginia and worked for more than 40 years in residential real estate and commercial insurance. During her retirement years she enjoyed travel, especially gifting trips to Hawaii and British Columbia to her children and grandchildren. She participated in various activities in her community, Carolina Preserve at Amberly, and was a member of the CABO Beading Club and Triangle Beading Association. Each year she was a juried participant in craft shows in Raleigh, Cary and Holden Beach, NC, selling her lovely jewelry, scarves, and knitted goods under her “Gems by Em” banner.
Emily is survived by daughter Staley Christine White Bowden (Brad Robinson) of Mona Vale, New South Wales, Australia and son Chester Patchen White, III (Alessandra) of San Francisco, CA. Other survivors are grandchildren Olivia, Gwen, and Griffin White and their mother Melissa Gardner White of Maryland, grandchildren Thomas Ian Maxwell Bowden, Callum Garrott Bowden, and their father Matthew Bowden, all of New South Wales, and sister-in-law Joyce (“Jill”) Maxwell of Charlotte. An aunt, Elizabeth Maxwell Warren, and first cousins Marguerite Maxwell Slaughter, Lee Maxwell Harrison, Peter W.T. Maxwell, Edgar I. Maxwell of VA, Mary Ives Pugh of MD, and John Maxwell of NC also survive Emily.
A graveside burial service will be held at Providence Presbyterian Church, 10140 Providence Church Lane, Charlotte, NC 28277 on Wednesday January 22, 2020 at 4:00 PM.
A memorial service in Cary, NC is being planned for a later date.
