Victoria White Spencer-Hughes was born on January 19, 1915 to the late Willie White and Nellie King-White of Monroe, Arkansas. At an early age, Victoria voiced her faith, belief, and hope in Christ and became a member of the Blackfoot Church in Lexa, Arkansas after marrying Lewis Hughes. There under the pastorage of Rev. T.L. Jones, Victoria served as the clerk, secretary, usher, and mother. Working diligently and dutifully in whatever capacity was needed, Victoria revealed herself as a God fearing lady who loved to help others. Fulfilling these positions, she also exemplified the love of God that is a much needed quality to embrace life to its fullest. Victoria's employment was with Piggett's Mill in West Helena, AR. There she met, fell in love with, and married Lewis Hughes in 1951. This union lasted thirty-one years; and, on November 14, 1982, death severed the ties of the marriage when Lewis departed this life. She was also preceded in death by her children, Johnny Hughes, Ruby Mae Moss, and James Hughes, Sr. In 2000, after Victoria changed her residency from Phillips County, she became a member of the Mt. Calvary Church under the pastorage of Rev. Ronald Broussard. There she remained a faithful member until her health failed in 2002, and once again she returned to Phillips County to live with the assistance of her granddaughter Doris. Victoria departed this life on Sunday, August 9, 2009. She leaves to cherish her memories; one daughter-in-law, May Leether Hughes of Freeport, NY; nine grandchildren; Alvin (Jackie) Moss of Beloit, WI; Verna (Laumerion) Goodwin of Zion, IL; Doris (Leroy) Johnson of Lexa, AR; Lorraine (Curtis) Duton of Madison, WI; Janice (George)Henderson; James Hughes,Jr., and Keesha Hughes of Freeport, NY; and Gloria Thompson of West Helena, AR; a host of great grandchildren; two stepchildren; Arthur Hughes of West Helena, AR and Sentha Pendleton of Jonesboro, AR; and a host of cousins, nephws, nieces, and friends.
