Ruth Dicks was born 11 4m 1780, a daughter of James and Rachel (Beals) Dicks. She married 29 12m 1796 at Center Friends Meeting, Guilford Co., NC, Joseph Hodson/Hodgin. They came to Indiana about 1837 when they were received from Marlboro Friends Meeting, Randolph Co., NC, on a certificate to Cherry Grove Friends Meeting, IN. Ruth was disowned at the Sparrow Creek-Poplar Run Friends Meeting, Randolph Co., IN, for joining the Antislavery Friends who broke away from the main body of Friends in 1843.

Joseph and Ruth were the parents of 8 children: Elizabeth, James, Elias, Asenath, Nathan, Benjamin, Rachel and Tilnias.
