I only met my Great Grandmother when I was about 8 years old, but she was a wonderful woman that made the very best oatmeal raisen and chocolate chip cookies. She was widowed at that time and was living in a mobile home set on the back of the property of her youngest daughter, Alice.

I would ride my bike over to her house, visit and play in the orchards that were on the edge of the property. But what I remember best was that she always had some cookies and milk for me and would sit at the table and talk with me while I ate.

By the time I was old enough to understand how interesting her life must have been, she had passed away and that will always be a loss for me.

She was born in Germany in 1870 and she immigrated to the US in 1884 and lived initially in New York state. That is where at only 17, she met and married my Great Grandfather, Samuel Smiley. They were married in 1887, just 3 years after she arrived in the United States, so much change in so short a time period. A new country, a husband and shortly after they had 1 son, William, and 2 daughters, Eunice and Alice.

About 1920 the entire Smiley family moved to Lompoc, CA where the family continued to live for the next 3 generations at least.

Great Grandma was very active in her church, she was a devout Christian. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel, but they both lived long enough to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary. The photos of them on this site are from that day.

With loving memories,
Carrie
