Steven Lee Phillips, 65, of West Des Moines, Iowa died peacefully at Mercy Hospital on Thursday, January 23, 2020.

Steve was born in Des Moines, Iowa on July 25, 1954 to Ronald and Adina Phillips.

Steve graduated from Hoover High School and worked as a building engineer at Central Life and Kohl’s, as well as for the City of Urbandale.

His love of cars led him to work as a mechanic at Tegelers/Higgins Gas & Service Station.

His intelligence, creativity, and quick wit won him many friends.

Steve’s greatest delight was being of use to others by helping them and especially by making people smile and laugh.

Even on his difficult journey with Multiple Sclerosis, Steve managed most days to find something to say that would brighten someone’s day. His wife, Kandee, will especially miss his sense of humor and childlike charm.

Steve is survived by his wife of 27 years, Kandee; his children, Amanda Phillips of Ames and Matthew (Christa) Phillips of Waukee; grandson, Nathan Lasley; father, Ron Phillips; siblings, Lisa (Kurt) Moody, Kris (Peter) Judd, and Erik (Sara) Phillips. Steve was also a brother-in-law, and an uncle and great-uncle to a number of nieces and nephews.

Steve was preceded in death by his mother, Adina Phillips and his grandparents.

Steve loved his family deeply and will be missed by his family and friends.

A visitation period from 12-1 p.m. will be followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. on Saturday February 1, 2020 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street in Des Moines. A graveside burial service will follow at McLaren’s Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.
