After graduating from Bridgeton High School in 1942, Muriel worked at the Cumberland Hotel as an elevator operator and hat check clerk. She played the piano and organ at her home church, Trinity AME Church in Bridgeton.
Muriel moved to Newark, New Jersey in 1943 reuniting with her mother. She attended Lincoln School of Nursing in Bronx, New York. A few years later, Muriel met John L. Smith, Sr. of Elgin, Illinois who was her pen pal while he was in the United States Navy. John visited her in Newark, NJ while he was on leave and they were married on February 1, 1947. From that union they had 4 children: John, Jr., Scot, Teresa and Carll.
Muriel worked at several hospitals as a Registered Nurse. She retired from Crippled Children's Hospital in Newark, NJ after 35 years of service as an operating room supervisor. Muriel loved her family and vacationing, dancing, swimming and playing with the children in her family.
Muriel leaves to cherish her memories her children Scot (wife Angela), Teresa (husband Marion Kennedy, Sr.), Carll Smith and her God-Daughter Florence Rogers; her grandchildren Kimberly Mitchell, Marion Smith, Trina Smith, Scot Smith, Jr., Nikole Smith and Aaron Smith; 8 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Muriel was predeceased by her husband, John L. Smith, Sr. of 68 years and her son John Smith, Jr. She will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
