Howard Baillie Warren died August 22, 2014, at his home in Gadsden, Ala.
Howard was born in Atlanta, Ga., on March 25, 1946. His family moved to Gadsden when he was 10 years old. Howard attended public schools in Gadsden, graduating from Gadsden High School in 1964. Howard attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated in 1968 with a BA in English. Howard enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1968. His military service concluded with a single tour in Vietnam. After his discharge in 1971, he attended the University of Alabama School of Law at Tuscaloosa. Howard earned a JD degree in 1974 and served for a year as law clerk to Walter Gewin, Federal Judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Howard then returned to Gadsden and established a law practice with James Turnbach. Howard and Jim were in practice together for almost 39 years before his death. His law firm became his second family. In his legal career, as in his life, Howard was always honest, prompt, patient and wise. Howard treated all people with respect and courtesy. Howard loved, and was loved by, his wife of 44 years, Kathleen, his children and his grandchildren. Howard was determined to stay fit and sane, and to that end, spent many after-work hours at the YMCA. Howard was a fan of baseball, basketball, football, and (before his illness) the occasional glass of single-malt scotch. Howard had an outgoing and engaging personality, a dry wit and never took himself too seriously. Howard died, as he lived, with grace and dignity. Howard was preceded in death by his son, Joshua John Warren; and his parents, William and Jane Warren.
