Singer and Musician. He was a founding member and sole original survivor of The Kingston Trio, who brought folk music to the mainstream and music charts during the 1950s and '60s. Born Robert Castle Schoen in Hawaii, in his teens he taught himself to play the ukulele and the guitar. The Kingston Trio was formed in 1957 by Shane, Nick Reynolds and Dave Guard, who met while the three were attending college in the San Francisco Area. Using only acoustic guitars, banjoes and singing simple melodies, they began playing local clubs. In 1958. the trio landed a recording contract with Capitol Records and released their first album, 'The Kingston Trio,' which contained the song, 'Tom Dooley,' which went on to be a huge hit. By 1961, after two Grammy Awards and numerous gold records, Guard left the group and was replaced by John Stewart. Over the next five decades, with Shane as a member in different variations of the group, they would go on to release dozens of albums, among them 'Sold Out' (1960), 'Sunny Side!' (1963), 'Stay Awhile' (1965), 'Once Upon a Time' (1969), 'The World Needs a Melody' (1973), 'Aspen Gold' (1979), 'Looking for the Sunshine' (1983), 'An Evening with The Kingston Trio' (1989) and 'Live at the Crazy Horse' (1994). Shane retired from the group in 2004. The Kingston Trio, which would become one of the best-selling artists in the history of Capitol Records, along with Frank Sinatra, The Beatles and The Beach Boys, were selected by National Public Radio in 2006 as one of the 100 most important American musical works of the 20th century, and in 2010, they received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy award.
