Merle grew up on Foxes Ridge in Acton, Maine, the son of Ralph Neal Dow Treadwell and Kate Mace Treadwell, along with his three brothers and two sisters. Merle graduated from West Lebanon Academy as class valedictorian and was a veteran of World War II where he served as an aircraft mechanic in the Navy. After World War II, Merle worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, from which he retired in 1984.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Norma (Libby) Treadwell, and five of their children, Rhonda Treadwell, Merle (Treadwell) Riggs, Marsha Treadwell, Gary Treadwell and Bruce Treadwell, as well as three grandchildren, Christopher Riggs, Natalie Cochran and Kirby Parm. He is also survived by his sister, Shirley Chick, and is predeceased by his brothers Malcolm Treadwell, Burton Treadwell and Ralph Treadwell, and sister Arlene (Treadwell) Leonard.
