Son of Isaac and Polly (Caudle) Barber. Husband of Mary (Johnson) Barber.

Doctor Ruffin Barber enlisted at age 23 as a Private in Company I, 24th NC Infantry (originally 14th Regiment NC Volunteers) on June 11, 1861 and was promoted to Corporal on February 1, 1863. He was present and accounted for until injured by a musket ball at or near Fort Steadman, VA on March 25, 1865. Doctor Ruffin Barber applied for a pension with the State of North Carolina on June 28, 1901 in Johnston County, NC. He re-applied for a pension increase in Wake County, NC on July 2, 1917.

Doctor Ruffin Barber was captured, along with his brother George R Barber, on 26 March 1865 near Petersburg, Virginia and sent to Point Lookout, Maryland. He and his brother George signed the Oath of Allegiance on 24 June 1865. Document states that Doctor Ruffin Barber had light skin, brown hair, hazel eyes, and was 5' 9 1/2" in height.
