Sam Smith, age 73, of Marion, Illinois, passed away on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at 6:18 p.m. in Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri.
Sam was born on October 7, 1946 in Marion to Stanley and Wanda (Jones) Smith. He married Jane Woodruff on Valentine’s Day, 1969 and she survives.
Sam served his country proudly in the U.S. Army. He retired from the City of Marion with his last 27 ½ years working for the Marion Police Department. After retirement, he worked as a funeral assistant at Blue Funeral Home. Sam enjoyed attending Whiteash Freewill Baptist Church and loved going to Fort Walton Beach, Florida and sitting on the beach spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife of fifty years, Jane Smith; his daughter, Kristal and husband Tim; two grandsons; his sister, Barbara; brother-in-law, Bill.; his nephews; his niece; and his baby boy, “Boo.”
A memorial service will be held at Blue Funeral Home in Marion on Saturday, January 25, 2020 at 12:00 p.m. Military Rites will be performed by the Marion VFW and American Legion posts with assistance from the National Guard.
Visitation will be at Blue Funeral Home on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
