Robert was the fifth of six known children born to William Daniel Craig, Sr and Elizabeth Nickell Craig. He married Elizabeth Nickell, his first cousin, 24 January 1804 in Monroe Co, WV. Shortly after marrying, they moved to Montgomery Co, KY and later Monroe Co, KY. They had eight known children: William Daniel who married Rosanna Day, Margaret Perry and Elizabeth UNKNOWN; Isaac Nickell who married Catherine Hanson and Elizabeth Bloyer; Preston Nickell who married Elizabeth Jane James; Nancy Jane who married Charles W Scott; Narcissa who married Thomas Duncan Davis; Harriett who married Nicholas Hurst; Ruth Marie who married Alfred Greenfield Elledge; and Martha Ann who married John Hurst.

Robert served in the War of 1812 and was present at the Battle of the Thames (Battle of Moraviantown) which took place 5 October 1813 near Chatham, Ontario, Canada. It was a decisive American victory resulting in Tecumseh's death.

Family lore has it that on his way home to KY after the war, Robert passed through a country with abundant water and wonderful virgin timber near current day Paris, IL. He eventually moved to Clark Co, IL from KY in 1828. His son, William Daniel, and family had already moved to IL in 1824.
