He was born June 22, 1980, in Charleston, South Carolina, to Anquinette Phillips Hodges (Paul Hodges) and Donald Phillips.
Joshua was the loving husband and partner for 17 years of Jennifer Dobson Phillips, and was a devoted father to their only son, Evan James Phillips.
Though he worked as a foreman with the Resource Contracting family for nearly 10 years, Joshua’s true passion was making music of all kinds. For much of his life, Joshua was a singer-songwriter and a multi-talented musician who long dreamed of inspiring others through his craft. Joshua was a vocalist for the local rock bands DeadPenny and Download. Most recently, he spent many nights in a recording studio working on his solo endeavours with an amazing group of artists. Recording under the name Yasha, his self-titled album is pending release.
Besides his wife and son, Joshua is survived by his mother Aquinette and stepfather Paul; father Donald Phillips, sister Joy White and husband Charles of Carrboro, N.C.; aunt Marisa Shade and husband Tom of Wendell, N.C.; uncle Timothy Bright of Nags Head, N.C.; in-laws Phillip and Janet Dobson of Chesapeake; siblings-in-law and lifelong friends Lauren and Alan Ward of Elizabeth City, N.C.; and many, many, nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his maternal grandparents Harry and Joyce Bright of Elizabeth City, N.C., and paternal grandparents Earl and Mavis Phillips of Charleston, S.C.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 18, at 2 p.m. at Oman Funeral Home, located at 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake, VA. Burial will take place on Saturday, January 25, 2020 at 3:30 p.m., New Hollywood Cemetery, 1101 Peartree Road, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 with the Rev. Davin Phillips officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Oman Funeral Home and later, at his in-law’s home in Chesapeake and his mother’s home in Elizabeth City.
