Steven Richard Casey, the son of Freeman and Hilda (Torbensen) Casey was born on October 8, 1952, at Moorhead, IA. At an early age, his family moved to Cherokee where he attended school and Graduated from Washington High School in 1971. While there, Steve was a member of the Cherokee Young Singers led by Gary Leatherman. He also excelled in track. He ran the high and low hurdles and broke many school records. His senior year he won the state title in the high and low hurdles at both the indoor and outdoor meets. After high school, Steve attended UNI and ran track placing 5th in the nation at the Junior Olympics in the high hurdles. His love of the hurdles was passed down to his children as they all ran hurdles at state.

On March 1, 1975, Steve was united in marriage to Susan Clark at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Cherokee, IA. He worked at R.J. Thomas Manufacturing and later Lane Moore Lumber Company. He then went to work for the City of Cherokee for over 30 years in the waste water department until his retirement in 2015. Following his retirement, he worked part-time for Peoples Service in Sanborn, worked as a sportscaster with John O’Connor at KCHE, drove cars for Rasmussen Ford, and was a hazmat employee for the Cherokee Landfill. Steve also volunteered for the 2010 U.S. Census and was a timer for the Tomahawk Relays where he was named honorary referee.

Steve loved to travel and spent every anniversary with Sue in Hawaii. He enjoyed going to the Drake Relays, listening to Blues music, and watching high school sports. Most of all, he cherished the time spent with his family and friends.

On Monday, January 20, 2020, Steve passed away at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center with his family by his side. He was preceded in death by his parents, Freeman and Hilda Casey; and his father and mother-in-law Vernon and Fern Clark.

He will lovingly be remembered by his wife, Sue Casey of Cherokee, IA; his children, Nicholas, Trisha, Dustin, and Derek; eight grandchildren, [redacted]; brothers, Douglas, Mark; in-laws; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 23, 2020, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Military Rites will be provided by the Cherokee V.F.W. L.A. Wescott Post 2253 and the Cherokee American Legion.
