Hunter was born to Hunter Moore and Allie Johnson, Feb. 27, 1927 in Jackson, Miss. He graduated from Central High School and worked his way through Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, La. He earned a vocal music degree and began an operatic career and will start a scholarship program for future students with his will. After graduating, Hunter traveled to Europe auditioning and performing in opera productions. He moved to New York where he continued his vocal studies and performance career. Then he transitioned into a teaching career, employed at the University of Denver and eventually took a position at Lewis & Clark College in 1968 moving to Portland. Lilly Egli (born in Switzerland) moved to Portland from New York and the two were married Dec. 7, 1968. They were married for over 50 years and she preceded him in death Dec. 26, 2019. After several years at Lewis & Clark College, Hunter purchased a small church building in Sellwood, converting the downstairs into a studio where he taught voice lessons and the upstairs to a stage where the students put on musical performances. As he approached retirement, he sold the church and continued to teach private voice lessons from home into his 80's. Hunter was an active member of the Sixth's Christian Science Church in Portland. The last year of Hunter's life included major changes, as he and Lilly sold their home and moved into care facilities. Hunter was able to share his music until the end, playing the piano and leading sing-a-longs with the residence where he lived. He always loved the stage and any opportunity to perform! All eight of Hunter's siblings preceded him in death. He has 14 nieces and nephews, two that live in the area. His cremated remains will be buried with his parents and other relatives in Jackson, Miss. There will be a celebration of Hunter's life at 10 a.m., Monday, Jan. 27, 2020, at Sunnyside Meadows Memory Care in Happy Valley, where former students will sing for the residents. Friends are invitedated and buried alongside his parents.
