US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served Illinois' 19th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1967 until 1983. He attained his law degree from Northwestern University School of Law and served with the United States Army, prior to privately practicing law. He entered the political arena when he was elected to and served in the Illinois State House of Representatives from 1962 until 1966. He succeeded Gale Schisler for his US Congressional seat and during his tenure, Railsback showed Moderate tendencies. He served on the House Judiciary Committee and during the Watergate scandal, he crossed party lines to support impeachment of President Nixon. He was unsuccessful in his attempt for reelection in 1982 and lost the Primary Election to the more Conservative candidate Kenneth G. McMillan.
