Actor. Born in Chaska, Minnesota, he was most memorable for performing as the nemesis of evil-doers and monsters in the classic Universal Studio's horror movies of the 1930s and 1940s. He began his trial to being in monster flicks by playing Dr. Van Helsing in the original Broadway production of "Dracula" in 1927. Signed to Universal Studios, he reprised his role in the first film version of "Dracula" (1931), followed by appearing "Frankenstein" (1931). A veteran of over 85 films, his credits include "The Mummy" (1932), "Dracula's Daughter" (1936), "The Phantom Creeps" (1939), "Valley of Haunted Men" (1942), "Captain America" (1944) and "The Mask of Diijon" (1946). He died at age 81 in San Francisco, California.
