Negro League Major League Baseball Player. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1905, he played as an center fielder for the Pittsburgh Crawfords from 1928 to the mid 1930s. His center field skills proved enormously helpful and he was soon acting as assistant manager of the team. He also recruited players and was instrumental in the discovery of power hitter Josh Gibson in 1927. After he left baseball, he went on to pursue his calling as a reverend and was still recognized as one of the most prominent figures in African American baseball.
