Charles Henry Montague was the son of Samuel and Merinda (Whitehouse) Montague and was probably born at Vergennes Township, Kent County, Michigan, where his parents farmed. He was orphaned as a child and raised by his maternal grandmother, Maria (Underhill) Grindell. He married Cora Ann Reasoner on November 27, 1884, in Walton Township, Eaton county, Michigan. They had 2 children: Bernice J. and Charles Ivan Montague.
