Thomas Osborne was born September 4, 1946 on the family farm east of Atkinson, to Floyd and Helen (Malloy) Osborne. He attended grade school in rural Holt county and graduated from Atkinson High School in 1964.
Following high school he drove a rural milk truck route for Hubert Rauterkus. Around this time he met his future wife, Sandra Philbrick in O’Neill. They were married December 19, 1965 at the United Methodist Church in O’Neill.
Tom entered the National Guard in November of 1965, serving during the Vietnam Era, and went to basic training in Fort Ord, California. He was discharged from the National Guard in February of 1972.
Tom’s first son Jerry was born in June 1967 in O’Neill. Later that year, the family moved to Armour, South Dakota where Tom worked for L. Bowers trucking company. Tom transferred to the South Dakota National Guard and their daughter Doreen was born in 1969.
In 1974, the family moved back to rural Atkinson. In 1977, their son, Charley was born and the family moved into their current home east of Atkinson. Their youngest son Andy was born there in 1978. During this time, Tom worked for Ross Transfer for 20 years and then the Holt County Department of Roads until he retired in October of 2011. After retirement, Tom volunteered for the VA driving vets to doctor’s appointments in outlying areas.
Tom especially enjoyed his family and spending time with them. Many family gatherings took place at their home place over the years. Laughter was never in short supply when Tom was around.
Tom was an excellent cook and enjoyed cooking at home over his lifetime. His family enjoyed his creations in the kitchen and will fondly remember him for this.
Tom was a great storyteller and he enjoyed people. No person was a stranger to him, he could easily make a connection with them, and he would remember them. His memory was impeccable in regards to people, places, and facts.
Tom enjoyed many activities over the years, including raising cattle, traveling, and participating in various railroad history and railroad enthusiast clubs. Tom particularly enjoyed the rail motorcar clubs that he and Sandy traveled with around the Midwest. They would ride the rails in his collection of various motorcars. Tom made many friends participating in this hobby and enjoyed them, as much as he enjoyed the hobby.
Even though he traveled with work and his hobbies, Tom truly cherished his time at home; working on his rail cars, doing chores around the place, and visiting on the deck sharing a cup of coffee with family and friends.
Tom passed away in Omaha on January 14, 2020 surrounded by his loving family.
