Marsha (Folino) Paul, 72, of Upton, MA passed away on December 21, 2019 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Marsha is survived by her husband of 54 years, Ray Paul of Upton; son, David Paul of Upton; daughter, Julie Paul Brown of Hopkinton and her spouse Timothy Brown; her granddaughters, Megan and Abigail Paul of Upton and Lily Paul Brown of Hopkinton. She leaves her brother, Anthony Folino Jr. and his wife Carol of Hyannis, MA and sister Joan Vodoklys and her husband Mike of Falmouth, MA along with a large extended family.

Marsha was a loving, compassionate person who adored her family and would do anything to help others. After starting out as a hairdresser in 1965 she moved with her husband to Merced, CA while Ray served in the US Air Force. Upon return to Massachusetts, Marsha worked full-time and raised two children while attending college part-time at Framingham State University. In 1980 she graduated with honors with a degree in Organic Chemistry with minors in Math and Biology.

She went to work for Dow Chemical where she became a young star, earning 4 US patents in polymer chemistry between 1984 and 1988. She attended graduate school for organic chemistry at Brandeis University while continuing to work for Dow. In 1985 Dow awarded her a Special Achievement Award for inventing a fire protective coating for steel with a rating beyond anything in the market at the time.

In the late 1980s Marsha transitioned into Laboratory Automation, and was a top sales person for many years for Hopkinton based Zymark (now PerkinElmer). In 1999 she became Vice President of Sales and Marketing for a small laboratory automation start-up, TekCell. In her professional career she authored numerous technical papers and presented at several national conferences in the field of laboratory robotics.

Always a champion of education, Marsha decided to leave the private sector to give back and encourage young scientists. She earned her teaching certificate and taught 8th Grade Physical Science for 1 year at Hopkinton Middle School. While in that position she was able to convince her former colleagues to donate a laboratory robot to the school and she taught students how to program and operate it as an extracurricular activity.

Born in Watertown to Anthony and Franny Folino (deceased), she moved to Framingham in 8th grade where she met friends that she kept her whole life. Marsha and Ray met at Framingham South High School in 1962, raised their family in Natick and moved to Upton in 1994.

Marsha was committed to helping others and served on the Board of Selectman, Board of Health and Finance Committee in Upton. Marsha was an active member of the American Chemical Society, Women in Science, Mass BioTech Council, and a Co-founder and on the Board of Directors of the Laboratory Robotics Interest Group (LRIG) as well as the Framingham University Alumni Association. One her favorite parts of serving on these groups was awarding scholarships and grants for science education.

Marsha was devoted to her children and grandchildren and having her family around her was her greatest joy. Sadly, her bright light was overtaken by the effects of Fronto-temporal Dementia (FTD), which she suffered from the last few years. During her life she donated her blood, plasma, and brain scans for Alzheimer’s/Dementia research. Her brain has been donated to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston for further study so that her love of science and her desire to help others continues on.

A funeral service will be held Sat. Jan. 4th at 4:30 PM in the Chapel of the Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main St. Ashland, MA. Calling hours will be held Sat. from 2:30-4:30 PM prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Association for Fronto-Temporal Degeneration. https://www.theaftd.org/support-aftds-mission/
