William ‘Bill’ Geiger, born May 2, 1936, was the son of Ralph and Dorothy Whitney Geiger of Hiram. He spent his early life in Hiram graduating from Hiram High School in 1954 and Hiram College in 1958 with a degree in Health Physics.

Excelling in his schooling, he received a government fellowship to attend Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN to study nuclear physics. He then began his career with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

While in Oak Ridge, Bill met and married Joyce Pitts (who proceeded him in death.) Together they had two children. Over the next 25 years, the family moved from Tennessee, to California to Connecticut as Bill’s work as a nuclear criticality engineer required his skill and knowledge to maintain environmentally safe nuclear power at different plants across the nation.

In 1977 the family settled in Lakeland, FL where Bill was offered a position as a health physicist with International Mineral Corp. There he monitored Uranium levels during the process of phosphate mining.

After his retirement, Bill moved to South Pasadena, Florida to be near the Gulf of Mexico where he loved to sail and spend time on the water. He met and married JoAnne Gorman and together they traveled extensively and enjoyed many cruises. He also found a new passion studying genealogy, uncovering many interesting facts about the Whitney and Geiger families along the way.

For over 20 years, Bill battled cancer. He underwent traditional recommended treatments including chemotherapy, but as a life-long scientist he understood the importance of experimental treatments. As a patient at the Moffitt Cancer Center he participated in several paid research-based treatments, hoping the information gathered could help further generations fight this disease.

Bill passed away December 28, 2019 in hospice care at his home with JoAnne by his side.

He is survived by his wife, JoAnne, children Becky (Don) Jobe (Pennsylvania), Tim (Shari) Geiger (Tampa), six grandchildren, six great-grand children (as well as JoAnne’s six children and many grandchildren), sisters Janice Blake (Ravenna), Carla Altiere (Cuyahoga Falls) and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life and burial at sea will be held at a later date.
