Joseph was born in the village of Carlsruhe, Carrick Twp; in 1865. He was a son of Johan Hoffele (1828-1882) and Josephine Mayer (1831-1904).

He married Mary Tschirhart (1879-1968) on January 20th, 1903 in Berlin, Waterloo County. They raised 5 known children in Berlin, Ontario.
