Reverend Leo A. Lynch, 67, Hollidaysburg, passed away Thursday at Garvey Manor Nursing Home. He was born in Altoona, son of the late Leo C. and Matilda (Fiore) Lynch.

Surviving are a brother, Dr. James Lynch and wife, Karen of Greensburg; a sister, Leah Giurfa and husband, Giuseppe of Arnold MD; niece and nephew: Rachel and James Lynch Jr.; nephew, Joseph Giurfa; niece, Daniela Farabaugh; and many cousins.

Leo was a graduate of Bishop Guilfoyle High School and continued his education at St. Francis University and then at Pontifical College Josephinum Seminary in Columbus, OH, where he received his Master of Theology degree. He had previously been an elementary school teacher in the Altoona Catholic Schools (Sacred Heart Catholic School, McNelis Catholic School and St. Therese Catholic School).

Leo was ordained on May 15, 1983 by Bishop Joseph Adamec at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona.

He served at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament , Altoona, as Parochial Vicar from 1993 to 1995; Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, Altoona, in residence and Hospital Ministry, from 1995-1996; Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Altoona, in residence from 1996-2003 and Hospital Ministry from 1996 to 1997; Chaplain at Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School from 1997-1999, and Principal of Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School from 1999-2004; Our Lady of Fatima, Altoona, Administrator from 2003 to 2004, and Chaplain at SCI Smithfield from 2004 to 2010; Saint Joseph Catholic Church, Williamsburg, Pastor from 2004 to 2010; Saint Thomas More Catholic Church, Roaring Spring, Pastor, from 2011 -2019; and retired in Nov. of 2019.

He enjoyed cooking, especially Italian food, football, visiting Rome, March Madness Basketball, and was a great supporter of Athletics.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, Jan. 20, 2020 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave, Altoona where a vigil for the deceased will be held, and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2020 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, followed by a 10:30 a.m. funeral Mass, the Most Rev. Mark L. Bartchak, celebrant. Committal will be held at Calvary Cemetery.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made in Leo’s memory to: Sisters of IHM, 2300 Adams Ave., Scranton, PA 18509. The Sisters, Servants of Mary, were instrumental in Leo’s Christian Formation at the Mount Carmel School.
