Mrs. Peggy Penny, 87, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 16, 2020, at Duke South Main Hospital in Durham, North Carolina. She was surrounded by her family at the time of her home-going and is at home in heaven with our Lord.

She was born in Durham, North Carolina, and was the last living child of thirteen children born to the late Archie and Lora Dunn. Mrs. Penny was preceded in death by her husband, Julius Maynard Penny, and two of her five children: Jimmy Penny and Randall Penny.

She worked at Brogden Middle School for many years in the cafeteria in food preparation and also as a Nursing Aide at Hillhaven LaSalle Nursing Center. She did both jobs simultaneously for decades in order to raise her family and often worked sixteen-hour days seven days a week.

She loved her children very much. After retirement, Peggy was so committed to a strong work ethic that she continued to do private nursing aide duty for multiple individuals and families. She treasured her little dog “Thumper” tremendously, who was a constant companion and friend to her.

She did not hold academic degrees, but she was a scholar in taking care of those around her. She was not rich by monetary standards, but she was a millionaire in friends and family. She was never in the headlines of the day, but she was firmly in the hearts and thoughts of the many people she loved and cherished.

Peggy came to the Lord in saving faith late in life, but once this decision was made, she was a steadfast and faithful child of God. Her family and friends loved her entirely and she will be missed greatly.

Mrs. Penny’s surviving family members are her children: Rev. Dr. Danny Penny (Sharran), Judy Dickens (Scott Hanson), David Penny (Lynne); Daughter‑in‑Law, Karen Wheeler (Bill); Grandchildren: Randall Penny (Bethany), Joey Penny, Tim Penny, Lora Mae Pons (Chris), Jeremy Penny (Caroline), Paul Dickens, Jonathan Dickens (Kimberly), David Penny, Jr., Jessica Penny; and Great Grandchildren: Alexis Penny, Melanie Penny, Christopher Pons, Jack Pons, John Dickens, Jr., Elizabeth Dickens, Lillian Dickens; Great‑Great Grand Child: Jahmari Penny.

Her funeral was held Saturday, January 18, 2020, at the West Durham Pentecostal Holiness Church, 901 Alabama Avenue, Durham, NC 27705 at 2:00 p.m.
