Beloved father and grandfather, Larry D. Hale, 67, of St. Louis, MO, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2020, surrounded by loving family.

The oldest of four children, Larry was born on January 6, 1953, in Chicago, IL, to parents Layden and Irene Hale. An eclectic love of music, writing and an affinity for percussion defined his youth, something that would endure throughout his life.

Larry graduated from Wartburg College in 1974 and, drawn to the thrill of battle, found his way to the Law when he entered St. Louis University Law School in 1975. He began his formal career as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri in 1979, where he honed his craft as a litigator and developed a sterling reputation as a great orator and trial lawyer.

Determined to pursue a lifelong dream of entrepreneurship, he entered into private practice when he co-established the Lawfirm of Peoples, Hale and Coleman in 1988.

Over the course of his illustrious career, he represented clients from around the country as a trial attorney in the areas of corporate institutional and insurance defense, and criminal law. Notably, he served as an Assistant Special Counsel to Senator John Danforth’s investigation of the government siege at Waco, TX, from 1999-2000; as a member of the United States Magistrate Selection Committee, the federal Public Defender Selection Committee and the United States Sentencing Commission; and as Special Attorney General for the Missouri Gaming Commission. Additionally, he served on several educational, professional and community boards, including the Board of Governors for the Missouri Athletic Club from 2007-2010, where he was also First Vice President from 2009-2010.

Throughout his career, Larry received numerous professional awards, including the 2017 Mound City Bar Association Legal Legend Award and the prestigious Martindale-Hubbell AV rating. He formerly served as an instructor in trial advocacy at Washington University Law School and provided such instruction at Emory Law School in Atlanta, GA. Ultimately, he would end his career as Principal of The Hale Lawfirm.

As a loving father of three and grandfather of four, Larry raised his family in his image alongside former wife and lifelong friend, Melba Hale. He was a fixture of strength, grace, dignity, fun-loving exuberance and lighthearted spirit.

He is lovingly remembered by his children, Megan Giampapa, Lauren Hale and Lawrence Hale; grandchildren Sakura, Kai, Henry and Luca; siblings Layden Hale Jr., Lynda Hale, and Rita Hale; as well as numerous other family members, colleagues and friends.

Services: In celebration of Larry’s life will take place Saturday, Feb. 8 at the First Baptist Church of Chesterfield. A Visitation will take place from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m., with a Memorial Service immediately following at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to Covenant House Missouri , a non-profit organization dedicated to serving homeless, runaway, and at-risk youth in the city of St. Louis | 2727 N. Kingshighway Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63113.
