Mary Shoemaker "was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, November 7th, 1824. She came to Canada when in her fifth year. She has left one heir, Reuben Bowman who was born August 3rd, 1852, and is married to Louisa Geiger. They reside in Berlin [Kitchener], Ontario. She died July 28th, 1876."
- Eby, Ezra E. A Biographical History of Waterloo Township and Other Townships of the County. 1895.
---------
Waterloo Region Generations website gives Joseph C. Bowman as Mary's husband; however, it is questionable whether they were ever married (although he was the father of her son, Reuben Bowman):
- "Bowman" is not engraved on her gravestone.
- The 1861 Canada Census shows Mariann "Shoemaker" (age 37) and Reuben Bowman (age 9) living with her parents, Jacob D. and Jane Shoemaker.
- The 1871 census also shows Mary "Shoemaker" (age 47) living with her parents, but Reuben is not listed.
- A marriage register for Reuben Bowman and Louisa Geiger (000197) gives his parents as Joseph Bowman and Mary Ann Shoemaker.
- A death record (012620) noted that Mary was a "spinster."
