Melissa Annette May passed away following a brief illness on Jan. 23, 2015. Melissa was born Jan. 26, 1956 in Jackson County, Missouri, daughter of Dr. John S. and Betty May. She grew up in the Tacoma area and attended Annie Wright School and graduated from Wilson High School. Melissa attended undergrad at Willamette University (Salem, OR), were she was awarded Junior Girl of the Year. She attended law school at the University of Puget Sound, where she received her Juris Doctorate. She was then admitted to the Washington State Bar Association on Nov. 15, 1990. In her youth, Melissa enjoyed snow skiing and was an avid swimmer. She enjoyed traveling and
saw many sites in Europe, Mexico, New Zealand and Australia. In addition to her work in the court system, she enjoyed literature, art, music and film. Melissa served as a public defender in Okanogan, Ferry, Pend Oreille and Stevens Counties. She was active in the Bar Association, and was a member of the Stevens County Law Library Board. She was passionate about law and providing access to the judicial system for indigent persons. Melissa had a big heart and was an extremely caring person who will be missed by her family, friends and community. Melissa was preceded in death by her father, Dr. John S. May; brother, John S. May II, and her sister, Jamie S. May. She is survived by her mother, Betty May; nephews, John S. May III, and Dr. Flynn A. Rowan; her neice, Kyle M. Sheppard; five great-nieces, three great-nephews and numerous friends and colleagues.
