Peggy Thornton Byrd, age 90 of Monroe, passed away on January 15, 2020. She was born on February 7, 1929 in Monroe to the late James M. Thornton and Maggie Johnson Thornton. Mrs. Byrd was preceded in death by her husband, Bobbie Lewis Byrd; grandson, Christopher Byrd.

Mrs. Byrd was raised in Walton County and educated in Walton County schools. She worked for many years in the Tag and Tax offices of Walton County and served three terms as Walton County Tax Commissioner.

Mrs. Byrd was a lifelong active member of New Hope United Methodist Church in Between, GA.

Surviving members of her family are daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Johnny Davis; son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Kareen Byrd; sisters, Phyllis Hardigree and Nell McNeely; grandchildren, Sarah Davis Roche, Catherine Davis Nipper; five great grandchildren.

A visitation will take place from 5;00 pm to 7:00 pm on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at Meadows Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 19, 2020 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Loretta Stone officiating. Interment will follow to New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery in Between, GA.
