John married Deborah Seavey May 26, 1818, son of Joseph and Sarah of Machias Maine and daughter of George and Phoebe (Meserve) Seavey also of Machias.

He was in the 1820 census in East Machias and about 1828 moved to Wesley Maine and had a house near Fox Hill on the road to Machias. (likely present day RT 192 where it would meet Black's Road or now called Airline Road.)

John was a blacksmith and the postmaster for Wesley 1843 - 1845.
