DR. GEORGE P. LYMAN
Dr. George Porter Lyman, 63, died of cancer Tuesday at a local hospital.
Dr. Lyman, of 17110 SW Cedar Road, was born in Portland April 29, 1905, the son of Dr. and Mrs. James A. Lyman.
He was graduated from Pomona College, Pomona, Calif., in 1922 and from Yale Medical School in 1931. Dr. Lyman interned in Rochester, N.Y., and served a residency in surgery at St. Luke’s Hospital, San Francisco.
During 1932-33 he was ship’s surgeon for Grace Lines and Matson Lines. He worked the following year in the South See Islands on a scientific trip doing blood grouping work.
Dr. Lyman was in general practice in San Francisco from 1935 to 1939. Graduate work in ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania followed.
He opened his Portland ophthalmology practice in 1941, served as a commander in the Navy from 1943-46, then resumed his Portland practice.
Dr. Lyman was a member of the Pacific Coast Ophthalmology Society; American Medical Association; Oregon Medical Association; and the Physicians and Surgeons Hospital executive committee.
Survivors include his widow, Pauline Richey Lyman, at the family home; son Peter Lyman, Lansing Mich.; daughter, Cynthia Haney, Sacramento, Calif.; mother, Mrs. Ethel Lyman, San Jose, Calif.; and sister, Mary Eggleston, Milpitas, Calif.
A memorial service will be held at 12:15 p.m. Thursday at the First Unitarian Church.
