British editor and novelist. He was the third and youngest son of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien and Edith Mary (née Bratt) Tolkien. He attended the Dragon School and the Oratory School in Oxford. He enlisted in the Royal Air Force in 1943 and took flight training in South Africa. Post-war, he studied at Trinity College in Oxford, earning a BA in 1949. He was involved in the editorial work of his father's unpublished works and produced The Silmarillion in 1977, followed by Unfinished Tales in 1980 and a 12 volume compendium, The History of Middle-earth between 1983 and 1996. The Children of Húrin was released in 2007. Beren and Lúthien and The Fall of Gondolin were published as editorial works in 2017 and 2018, respectively. He is also credited with creating the widely acclaimed 1954 map of Middle-earth, which illustrates his father's The Lord of the Rings. He is survived by a son from his first marriage to Faith Faulconbridge, novelist Simon Mario Reuel Tolkien; his second wife, Baillie (née Klass) Tolkien and their two children, Adam Reuel Tolkien and Rachel Clare Reuel Tolkien; and his sister, Priscilla Mary Anne Reuel Tolkien.
