May 1899 - June 1919
Katie, the second child born to Ben Joe and Matilda Fair, was recorded in the 1900 U. S. Census in French Camp, Choctaw County Mississippi. Like Virgie, her elder sister, Katie was extraordinarily close to her mother. They all acted like sisters and enjoyed one another's company tremendously.
Her life was short-lived as she and her sister, Josephine were among the estimated 650,000 Americans that lost their lives to the infamous and tragic 1918-1919 influenza epidemic. This tragedy is renowned in oral family history; Grand Ma Matilda told others how devastated she was when the undertakers came to remove both her daughters from the home together, on the same day, while she herself was so sick she could barely raise her head to see the undertakers taking them out.
June 1919, at the age of 20, Katie departed this earthly life to go and live in eternity with ancestors who preceded her in passing. Our heartfelt emotions have never waned and she remains dear in our eyes.
