Randy Russel Curtis, 61 of Belle Fourche passed away unexpectedly March 14, 2019 at the Spearfish Regional Hospital.

He was born July 12, 1957 in Pierre, SD to Robert and Marlys Curtis. Randy grew up in Canning, SD and attended Canning Country School until 5th grade and then on to Sully Buttes High School in Onida. After graduating, Randy worked with his dad for Pat Feeney at the Knox Ranch. He grew up watching with a careful eye over his four sisters whom he dearly adored. Randy then decided to compete on the horse track where he and trainer Casey Hannum had a very successful partnership. He enjoyed being a jockey and was South Dakota’s leading jockey 2 years in a row. Following his time on the track Randy went to work for future father-in-law, Bill Barnes whom along with Gilbert Wood, he attributes to teaching him everything about marketing livestock. Randy married Bill’s daughter, Billie Barnes on May 15, 1979. To this union three children were born, Brian, Kaycee & Karisa. Randy took great pride in watching his kids compete and every now and then would be known to yell pretty loud. He also cherished his time with his grandchildren, watching Noah playing football, sorting cattle with Bayzen and his purple paddle and cheering Oaklee on at the jackpots. Randy met the love of his life, Mary Jo Scoggin in 2000 and they spent the past 19 years embarking on countless adventures making memories to last a lifetime.

Randy was a man of “unvarnished and unedited” nature. He told it exactly how he saw it – no strings attached. He did not care what you thought of his opinion and you’d pay hell changing his mind. You always knew where you stood with him, but at the same time he was very caring and he’d be the first in line to help out a friend. Randy enjoyed gathering crew and traveling to brandings throughout the area. He also donated his time and talent doing countless benefit auctions, fundraisers and Calcutta’s. He was proud to have spear headed the Belle Fourche High School Rodeo Club auction for 24 years. Randy spent a short period of time wrangling guests and cows at Kara Creek Ranch. Time spent at Kara Creek was very dear to him and he went back often. Randy was currently a field man at Belle Fourche Livestock which is where he began his sale barn journey in 1979. He always said he was back home and thoroughly loved sale days; coordinating and sorting cows and calves with his purple paddle, Elmer Fudd cap and radio in hand. He loved every aspect of the sale barn and was always the first to arrive in the morning. He loved to talk on the phone every day and even packed his phone into the bathroom to shower every morning. One phrase often spoken was “I gotta go, I got one beeping in”! His kind and charismatic nature blossomed at the sale barn, the auctions and just by hanging out with his friends and family.

Randy took up fishing a couple years ago and became very passionate about it. Although no one could believe it, it relaxed and gave him peace inside just as spider solitaire did. He could be seen showing his catch of the day photos on his smart phone, the only purpose to have it other than to search the internet with his phrase of “okay, Google……”. He loved to meet and talk to new people and always said he would rather have another friend, than another dollar. Randy made a huge impact on everyone he knew. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Marlys Curtis; father-in-law, Larry Scoggin and grandparents, CE and Anna Curtis and Les and Beulah Price.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, Mary Jo Curtis; children, Brian Curtis, Kaycee Curtis and Karisa Curtis all of Belle Fourche; sisters, Cheryl (Don) Fletcher of Costa Rica, Diane (Dale) Nuttall of Greybull, WY, Donna (Kelly) Green of Murdo, SD and Teri (Don) Heninger of Fort Pierre, SD; grandchildren, Noah Nixon, Oaklee Curtis and Bayzen Curtis; brother-in-law, Rett (Abbra) Scoggin; mother-in-law, Shawn (Grammie) Scoggin and 9 nieces and nephews.

Visitation was 6:00 to 7:00 pm, Friday, March 22 at Kline Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 23 at 11:00 am at the Belle Fourche Livestock Market.

The family extends an invitation for everyone to join them for lunch and sharing of memories at the Branding Iron Steakhouse following the funeral.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established at Pioneer Bank & Trust to support Belle Fourche High School Rodeo.
