News Article:

HAMILTON COUNTY — A 20-year-old Dahlgren man died and a Mt. Vernon teen-ager suffered major injuries in a single-vehicle crash discovered Wednesday morning in a rural area of Hamilton County on the Walpole blacktop.

Jordan Gray, son of John and Vallery Gray, was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck, which was discovered by a passing motorist around 7 a.m. Wednesday on Walpole Road, west of Hamilton County Road 675 East. Walpole Road is about 12 miles south of McLeansboro, between Dale and Eldorado.

A passenger in Gray's vehicle, Danielle McCormick, 19, of Mt. Vernon, suffered major injuries and was airlifted from the scene to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind.

According to Illinois State Police spokesman Mark Zimmerman, Gray was driving east on Walpole Road in a 1997 Chrysler when, for unknown reasons, the car left the north side of the road and overturned in a ditch.

Neither Gray nor McCormick were wearing seat belts, Zimmerman said.

He said the wreck remains under investigation and, as of late Wednesday afternoon, it had not been determined what time the wreck actually happened. Information was also not available as to why the victims were in the rural area.

Hamilton County Sheriff Greg Brenner declined to comment on the wreck, referring calls and questions to the state police.

An Illinois State Police District 19 crash reconstruction officer is assisting with the traffic crash investigation, according to Zimmerman.

Gholson Funeral Home is handling the funeral arrangements for Gray. Obituary information was incomplete as of this morning.

McCormick's medical condition was not available from Deaconess Hospital.
