Mary Ann lived in Tampa, Florida and worked in the treasurer's office at City Hall. In March of 1959 she married Gordon Henshaw, a divorcee and ex-marine whom she met during his time vacationing in Tampa. The two settled in his home in Depew, New York, a Buffalo suburb. On May 28, 1959 Mary Ann disappeared. It wasn't until her mother came to Depew from Tampa several days later looking for her daughter that her husband reported her missing. Newspapers reported that Mary Ann was being abused, was fearful, and planned to leave her husband. A guest in the home the day she went missing reported witnessing an argument between Mary Ann and her husband. The guest left with the understanding that Mary Ann would join her down the street within an hour. Mary Ann never showed up and she was never seen or heard from again. Her husband reported that she walked out wearing a blue dress and carrying only a billifold. Mary Ann's missing person case went cold but was revived in 1962 when her husband was arrested in the fatal stabbing of Mrs. Joyce Kent. However, the murder case was dismissed due to lack of evidence and Mary Ann's disappearance remains unsolved.

Mary Ann was one of seven children born to Raymond and Ida (Felts) Lee.
