Dr. Howard Clay Jackson Jr., 89, of Madison, Indiana, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2020, at Thornton Terrace Health Campus in Hanover, Indiana.

He was born Oct. 31, 1930, in Rockport, Indiana, to Howard and Dona Stuteville Jackson. He grew up in Rockport and was a 1948 graduate of Rockport High School. He attended Indiana State University and graduated in 1952. At Indiana State he was a founding member of the school’s chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.

After graduation from Indiana State he served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 at Fort Knox, Kentucky. After being honorably discharged he enrolled at the Indiana University School of Medicine and upon graduation in 1962 served medical residencies at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, and Hanford Community Hospital in Hanford, California. He moved to Madison in March 1964 to begin his career in medicine as a general practitioner in private practice and as an active member of the King’s Daughters’ Hospital medical staff. At KDH he served as an officer, department chair, and chief of staff several times. He was a member of the Jefferson-Switzerland County Medical Society and was active in the Indiana State Medical Association, serving as delegate for many years. He was also a member of the American Medical Association, American Academy of Family Practice and a diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice. Having served on the Board of Directors of the Jefferson County Mental Health Association and Southeastern Mental Health and Guidance Center, in 1988 he joined the medical staff of Madison State Hospital where he provided on-call coverage until his retirement.

He retired from medical practice in December 2010 at the age of 80. During his more than 46 years serving the Madison community, he delivered hundreds of babies, served as doctor in the pits for the Madison Regatta and team doctor for Hanover College football. He made house calls in the early years of his practice and treated generations of family members. He loved being a doctor and worked tirelessly to be available and treat his patients at all hours of the day.

He was also involved with numerous fraternal, social, civic, and service organizations including the Madison Chamber of Commerce, Jefferson County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, and Jefferson County United Way. He was a member of the Madison Elks Lodge No. 524 and Rockport Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite — both for more than 50 years — and an Indiana State University Alumni board member, Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services commission member, and past trustee and member of the Madison Chamber of Commerce and Madison Golf and Country Club.

He enjoyed golfing and, in his later years, the “choose up” at Sunrise Golf Course. Photography was a passion and wherever he traveled, his camera was with him. He especially liked taking photos of his family, the Ohio River, and the changing foliage of Madison and its hillsides. He was also an avid coin collector his entire life, an exercise enthusiast, and enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Faye Jackson; three sons, Clay Jackson of Indianapolis, Tom Jackson of Santa Rosa, California, and John Jackson of Madison; a daughter, Susan Neff of Concord, North Carolina; a stepson, Greg Johnson of Seymour, Indiana; a stepdaughter, Mitzi Lawson of Hanover, Indiana; four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two step-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Phyllis Virginia McMahan Jackson; and a brother, Malcolm Duane Jackson.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2020, at Lytle Welty Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Vail Chapel on Madison’s Hilltop.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until the time of the service Tuesday at the funeral home. Masonic rites will be conducted by the Madison Masonic Union Lodge No. 2 F.&A.M. during the memorial service. The Honor Guard of the Major Samuel Woodfill Post No. 9, American Legion and the U.S. Army will conduct military honors during the memorial service Tuesday.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the King’s Daughters’ Hospital Foundation or the Madison State Hospital Indigent Fund. Contributions can be made at Lytle Welty Funeral Homes & Cremation Service or online at lytlewelty.com
