Morris J. Martin, 63, for years a Clarion-Ledger salesman at the corner of State and Capitol streets, died suddenly Friday morning. Martin was on his way to his home at 502 N. Jefferson St. when stricken with a heart attack at 11 a.m. He died before he could be rushed to the hospital. Martin had been in failing health for some time, but continued to sell his papers daily at the busy downtown corner. He had been a newspaper salesman for both the Clarion-Ledger and the Jackson Daily News for 18 years. He was a native of Hinds county, near Terry, where he was a farmer before coming to Jackson in 1929. He was a member of Shands Memorial Methodist church. His survivors include his wife, the former Miss Jessie Chapman of Crystal Springs: three sons, Frank E. Martin, of Memphis, William M. Martin and Henry E. Martin, both of Jackson; two daughters, Mrs. Alice Silence, and Mrs. Ruth Watkins, both of Jackson: four brothers, W. T. Martin, Earl Martin, both of Raymond, J. C. Martin, of Jackson, and Charlie T. Martin, of Crystal Springs; three sisters, Mrs. Martha Veazey, of Jackson, Mrs. E. T. Whitehead, of Terry, and Mrs. Albert Packer, of Van Winkle; 13 grandchildren, and one step-son, Robert B. Sheppard of Jackson. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a. m. Monday from the Bethesda Baptist church, near Terry, with the Rev. W. S. Valentine, pastor of Shands Memorial Methodist church, and the Rev. R. R. Tipton, pastor of Bethesda Baptist church, officiating. Interment will be made in the Bethesda Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Henry Mullens, Addison DuLaney, Robert Crisler, all of Terry, M. P. Berryhill, Wm. H. (Bill) Jones, and E. R. Therrell, all of Jackson. His body will be at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home until time to leave for the church Monday morning.
