GOLDEN WEDDING. CELEBRATION AT LEVIN
The golden wedding celebrations commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the marriage of Mr and Mrs J. W. Procter, of Levin, were held this week when some 300 relatives and friends assembled. The bride of half a century ago received her guests in a frock of black silk marocain, with violet trimmings and carried a bouquet presented to her on arrival at the Hall by Mrs Richard Prouse, who also decorated Mr Procter with a button-hole. Mr and Mrs Procter made their way through an arch of gulden wands to the stage. Seated with them were Mrs Procter’s mother (Mrs Retter), her sister (Mrs J. A. Roach, of Shannon), her brother (Mr F. Retter, of Matangi), the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs P. W. Goldsmith), and Rev. and Mrs J. C. Davies. Mrs Procter’s mother in her ninety-eighth year. The evening was happily spent in musical items rendered by Mrs C. R. J. Inder, Miss M. Feigler, Messrs J. D. Brown and H. Denton, with Maori action numbers by Misses Olive Hanita, and Piwi and Bessie Matakatea. An interesting account of the construction of the railway to Levin and on to Palmerston North was given by Mr F. Retter and a number of complimentary speeches were made. Members of Mr and Mrs Procter’s family present were their four sons, Messrs S. P. Procter [Fred Stickle Pemberton] (Wellington), C. G. S. [Cyril Gordon Stickle] Procter (Levin), J. S. Procter [John Joseph] (Wellington) and W. R. S. [Willie Retter Stickle] Procter (Levin) and one daughter, Mrs C. A. Ginders (Wellington). Through sickness in the family the other daughter, Mrs S. Hinton [Nina Rita Kaiewa] (Pukekohe), was unable to attend. The visiting guests included: Mr and Mrs W. Homes (Bulls), Mrs J. Maru Maru (Aramoho), Mr and Mrs P. Milne (Wanganui). Mrs Ginders, senr., (Wellington), Mrs R. Andrews (Palmerston North), Mr H. J. Retter (formerly of Shannon, but now home on furlough from Persia), Mr and Mrs R. V. Brown (Lower Hutt), Mr and Mrs N. Vickers (Taihape), Mrs Hislop and family (Wellington), Mrs Arras (Auckland), Mr and Mrs J. Gillespie (Otaki) and Mr J. Bebbington (Otaki).
