British Military Officer. His dramatic career began in the British East India Company. His military skills and acumen resulted in his becoming Governor of Bengal and extremely wealthy. In the process he secured British domination of India. Eventually this provoked jealousy and criticism resulting in his being tried for abusing his position. The stress of the trial led to mental illness and his suicide.
