Nancy Gilley, 81, passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on April 2, 2019. She was born March 11, 1938, in Bar Harbor, the daughter of Erwin and Clara (Beam) Webber.
Nancy married Reginald Gilley Sr. and on Dec. 24, 2018, celebrated 63 years of marriage. For many years Nancy served the “summer folks.” She enjoyed keeping their homes “spic and span.” Come fall, it delighted her to watch them pack up their automobiles and head out of town! She believed being on her knees to pray was a good thing, but for scrubbing floors? Not so much.
Nancy enjoyed raising her four children and caring for her husband. Even though Reggie ruled the roost, Nancy ruled the rooster! You would always see Reggie peeling potatoes as they prepared for another family holiday. Getting together at the Gilley home was so very “Americana.” One almost expected to see the “Waltons” drive into the door yard in their 1930 Model A Ford, bringing with them homemade apple pies. Nancy enjoyed going to bingo and playing cards. She was a down-to-earth kind of person, a true “Mainer” who believed “you should be what you is … cause if you be what you ain’t … you ain’t what you is.” She was sensible and simplicity was the foundation on which she stood throughout her life.
In addition to Nancy’s parents, she was predeceased by two sons, John Gilley and Reginald Gilley Jr., a brother, Erwin Webber, and a sister, Beverly Jordan.
She is survived by a son, Everett Gilley, and his soul mate Linda, as well as daughter Carol, a brother, Bob Webber, and his wife, Jenny, a sister, Lorraine, and her husband, Michael, a sister Helen Day, a brother-in law, Ernest Gilley, a sister-in-law, Theolyn Gill, four grandchildren, Kirstin, Derek, Felicia and Travis, three great-grandchildren, Finley, Mason and Colt, and nieces and nephews.
A service of remembrance will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at St. Brendan’s Anglican Parish, 176 Harbor Dr., Bass Harbor. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to your favorite charity.
