Fort Bend Herald, January 12, 2020:

Stephen York Powers passed away after an extended illness at Memorial Hospital Sugar Land on Wednesday, January 6, 2020.

Steve spent most of his youth in Colorado and was a longtime resident of Fort Bend County. He retired in 2016 after careers in sales, banking, and entrepreneurial ventures in publishing. In the early 90's, he published a monthly magazine, Fort Bend Days and Nights, featuring local events.

He was a Vietnam veteran who proudly volunteered for service. He served two tours in the Navy aboard the aircraft carrier, the USS Kittyhawk.

Before retirement, he authored two books, O'Shannon's Way and Unfinished Business, inspired by the traveling he and wife, Sylvia, had been doing to sites important to U.S. history. O'Shannon's Way was written after experiencing the Natchez Trace and a reenactment of the Battle of Shiloh.

Steven's great gift was for listening. He was genuinely interested in other people and let them know that they had his full attention. Steve had an endearing charm and a spirit of generosity that came naturally. No matter how difficult a situation, he could make anyone feel better.

Steve "was a brother who always took care of his little brother in hard times." He had a generous spirit and was a great storyteller. His upbeat attitude and caring heart is what his family will remember and miss most about him.

Stephen was born April 26, 1946 to Niles Loy Powers and La Don York Powers.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Eileen Hankins Powers; son, Geoffrey York Powers; daughter, Sara Ashley Perrott; and stepson, Jason Musgrave, whom he shares with former wife, Judith Smith. He is also survived by his brothers, Leslie Kent Powers.

He is preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Loy Powers Smith, as well as both parents.

In June, he would have welcomed his first grandchild, a boy by his son Geoff, and wife, Loren.

Per his wishes, his ashes will be scattered over the Continental divide in Colorado at a later date. A memorial service for Stephen will be held Tuesday, January 14, at St. John's United Methodist Church in Richmond.
