***Important note regarding burial: The Newman Family Cemetery was a private family cemetery established on land owned by Nimrod Newman, who had left Virginia and settled in Grainger County, Tennessee. Nimrod Newman and his wife, Sarah (Arthur) Newman, were both buried in this cemetery. It was destroyed with the construction of the Cherokee Dam and the creation of the Cherokee Lake Reservoir.

Nimrod Newman served as a fifer during the French and Indian War. In 1776 he enlisted in Captain Adam Clement's Virginia militia in Bedford county. The unit was sent to assist General Nathaniel Greene in the South Carolina campain of 1781. After the war he was given 354 acres for his service.

He operated a Grist mill with his brother Conrad. He settled late in life in Grainger County, Tennessee. He and his wife Sarah (Arthur) Newman had a large family.

Will of Nimrod Newman

In the name of God Amen. I, Nimrod Newman, Sr. of the county of Grainger and state of Tennessee being very low and weak in body but in my perfect mind and memory, thanks be given to God, calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed once for all men to die, do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament That is to say principle and first of all, I give and recommend my soul into the hand of almighty God that gave it me, and my body I recommend to the Earth to be buried in a decent Christian burial at the discretion of my Executors, nothing doubting but at the General Resurrections I shall receive the same again bay the mighty power of God and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me with in this live. I give and dispose of the same in the following manner and form First, I give and bequeath unto my dearly beloved wife, SARY, two negroes by the name of Bob and Tellen and one feather bed and furniture. During her natural lifetime, said Bob and Tellen be hired out by my Executors and money to be for the support of my wife, Sary. 2nd, I give and bequeath unto my sons, Arthur, Nimrod and Jesse Newman, one dollar sterling as I have heretofore given each of them a tract of land in Grayson County, Virginia; one tract I purchased of Hennery Newman, one other of Coonrod Newman and the other of Anderson Melton, it being the portion allotted the above three sons. 3rd, I desire all the rest of my property, real and personal, to be sold by my Executors, and the amount of such sales to be equally divided after paying all my just debts and funeral charges, between Rebeckah, Betsy, Seney, Sally, Pheby, Bird, Emeley and Garret Newman. Also Patsey and Sidney's children they bore by John Hudnall and Franklin Creasey - I also desire my son Jesse Newman to have the crop of grain that is or maybe growing at my decease - I also desire my Executors to be paid for all the necessary trouble they may be at and to pay all my just debts. I also constitute and appoint Philip Segler and Jesse Newman my soul Executors of this my Last Will and Testament. And I do heareby utterly disallow, revoke and [?] all and every other former testaments, wills, legacies, bequeath and executors by me in any wise before named  willed and bequeathed, ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my Last Will and Testament. In witness whereof I have heareunto set my hand and seal this the 26th day of March, 1815. Nimrod Newman
